Home to ancient rock carvings and continuing ancient customs, this north western province is like a real-life time capsule. The province is the homeland of the Muslim Hui ethnic minority (which makes up one-third of the population). This is a land in which ancient customs and traditions are still very much practised and followed.
Yinchuan
Yinchuan City, on the banks of the Yellow River, is the provincial capital of Ningxia. The city is a fusion of Hui ethnic style and culture, a fact testament with the numerous mosques adorning the city. Just outside the city you can explore the well-preserved imperial tombs of the Western Xia Mausoleums.
Guyuan
Visit the Mount Sumeru Grottoes, one of the ten most famous grottoes in China. Also soak in the unique architecture, food and culture of the Hui people.
Wuzhong
One of the birthplaces of Chinese civilization, explore the 108 towers of Qingtongxia.
