Henan Province: Zen-Buddhism, Kung-Fu and ancient capitals born out of a rugged and dramatic land

Located in the east-central Chinese mainland, this seldom spoken of province is actually one of China’s most populated (even though you wouldn’t think this whilst exploring its many towns and canyons). This province is surprisingly home to Kung-Fu (the Shaolin martial arts) and Zen-Buddhism. Furthermore, the province claims fame to being the originator of Buddhism in China and is an extremely important Taoist epicentre. Combine these extraordinary philosophical roots with dramatic natural landscapes and you’ll be well on your way to your own mini spiritual enlightenment… If you feel the need to balance your Chi, Zhengzhou is a lively and upcoming modern city screaming to be explored.

Zhengzhou

The provincial capital of Henan province, Zhengzhou is an archetypal contemporary Chinese city: historic sections of the city merge and interwind with the new state-of-the-art districts. The Zhengdong New District is a truly masterful feat of modern urban planning, and is a premonition of the future of Zhengzhou (and possibly cities beyond). Be sure to spend some time appreciating the extensive historical collections at the Henan Provincial Museum (a great way to gain an understanding of the 5000 year old history of the province).

The nearby Songshan Mountain is the birthplace of Shaolin martial arts. This is the cradle of Zen Buddhism, Chinese martial arts and all things Kung-Fu (so all the Bruce Lee fans out there should pay their respects). A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Shaolin Temple here is a must visit: the Shaolin martial arts performance is a real heart-in-mouth experience which will leave you philosophising over the physical capabilities of the human body…

Luoyang

Located in the western part of the province, Luoyang is a history-filled region. The city is home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Longmen Grottoes and the Buddhist White Horse Temple. The Longmen Grottoes are one of China’s four great Buddhist grottoes: this 1000 year old master piece is a true dedication of belief, with innumerable Buddhist effigies (of all sizes) sculptured into the hard mountain rock.

The White Horse Temple (built in the first century AD) is the first Buddhist temple to be erected in China. Adding to the rich cultural history of the area, Laojun Mountain is an important Taoist shrine (legend has it that Lao Tzu, the founder of Taoism, lived out the remaining years of his life here). The White Cloud Mountain is also worth a visit: explore waterfalls, forests, rock formations and gaze out as you stand above the clouds.

Kaifeng

Ancient Kaifeng was one of China’s ancient capitals and was also considered to be one of the world’s first metropolises. With a 4000 year history and serving as the seat of the nations government during 8 dynasties, Kaifeng is magnificent place to become acquainted with ancient Chinese history. So get the day-pack ready, and explore the temples, shrines, relics and museums on offer.

Cap-off your day with a visit to Longting Park (think ancient monuments and gorgeous floristry).

Anyang

Worth mentioning, the Yinxu Museum is a UNESCO World Heritage Site housing all types of artefacts dating back to the founding of China itself. Furthermore, visitors can explore the remains of royal tombs and palaces here. If you find yourself paying a visit to the museum, take some time to explore the nearby Taihang Grand Canyon Scenic Area: a spectacular fusion of forests, waterfalls and rock face (a great hiking option).
