China’s largest province, Xinjiang covers about one-sixth of the China’s total landmass. The homeland of the Muslim Uyghurs and 47 other ethnic minorities, Xinjiang is a true melting-pot of culture and history. The province plays host to an array of natural beauty, including vast deserts, snow-capped mountains and glaciers. This vast area is truly home to some of the most awe-inspiring natural scenery on Earth. Contrary to popular belief, Xinjiang can be easily visited by solo or independent travellers.
China’s largest desert, Takla Makan Desert, stretches across the province. The Tianshan Mountains act as a natural barrier, dividing the region into a distinctive northern region (think grasslands and horse-studded nature reserves) and southern region (think sand dunes and camel caravans). The capital city Urumqi is about historic as they come: the city has played an important historical significance as a major outpost along the Silk Road. Most trips to Xinjiang will lead to Urumqi, but the true majesty and wonder of the region can only be fully appreciated in it’s nature.
